As domestic violence death toll mounts in N.S., calls come to fund support agencies

According to Emma Halpern, Executive Director of Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia and Co-Founder of PATH Legal, naming domestic violence as an epidemic is only the first step. To address the root causes of this violence and engage in prevention, "We have to properly resource the people with the expertise to figure out the solutions. It can't be an issue of the moment, with a few hundred thousand dollars thrown at women's shelters and then walk away." Pointing to the recommendations of the Mass Casualty Commission Inquiry, Emma says that "Very few of the recommendations (on domestic violence) have actually been taken up. Let's commit to actually following through on all of the commission's findings."

Robert Wright, Director Emeritus of Peoples' Counselling Clinic, asserts that without addressing the root causes of male-perpetrated violence, such as abuse they have experienced themselves, it is unlikely that incidents of domestic violence will decrease: "We need to unpack the tragedy... so many Black families are experiencing because they don't get access to the right resources to keep their young men on the right track from an early age, and they end up in tragic circumstances."
